After approving the food security bill, India’s challenge is to get all that heavily subsidized food grain to the 800 million or so people eligible to the program.
The bill expands an existing program that uses a five-decade-old public distribution system to deliver food subsidies to the poor and hungry. Experts say the system is highly inefficient, with more than half the food siphoned off and sold in the open market for higher prices.
