Turmeric Kills Pancreatic Tumors

Considering that the conventional treatment of advanced stage pancreatic cancer can result in as little as a 1% 5-year survival rate, new preclinical research on a liposomal turmeric extract that inhibits pancreatic tumor growth by 42% is all the more amazing.
A promising new study published in the journal Anticancer Research, a peer-reviewed medical journal published by the International Institute of Anticancer Research, reveals a unique turmeric extract known as liposomal curcuminmay provide an ideal chemotherapy alternative in the treatment of highly lethal pancreatic cancers.
Curcumin is the primarly polyphenol in turmeric, and has been the subject of extensive research demonstrating its ability to kill cancer cells, with over 1,500 studies available to view on Greenmedinfo.com relevant to over 100 distinct cancer types, including 24 studies demonstrating its anti-pancreatic cancer properties.
Liposomal curcumin utilizes a successful lipid-based drug delivery system, with some liposomal formulations having already received FDA approval. Owing to curcumin’s low water solubility and subsequent low systemic bioavailability, its encapsulation into liposomes (artificially-prepared vesicle composed of a lipid bilayer) greatly improves its ability to gain entry into the body by passing through the ‘glucoronidation barrier’ in the liver.
Exocrine pancreatic cancer is notorious for responding poorly to conventional treatment, with American Cancer Society statistics promising only a 14% 5-year survival rate in Stage IA cancers, spiraling down to only 1% for Stage IV types. Moreover, even when chemotherapy, surgery and radiotherapy results in the successful debulking of the tumor, and the patient manages to survive past 5 years, recurrence is still common; this often occurs as a direct result of conventional treatment, which damages the immune system and enriches the treatment-resistance tumorigenic cancer stem cell population within the post-treatment cancer survivor’s body.
The new study was performed by researchers at the Department of Molecular Biology and Immunology, and Institute for Cancer Research, University of North Texas Health Science Center, Fort Worth, Texas. They determined the antitumor effects of a liposomal curcumin formulation against human pancreatic cancer cells through in vitro and xenograft studies, where the cells were implanted into mice to form tumors.
The liposomal curcumin formulation was found to inhibit pancreatic cancer cell proliferation in vitro, and when administered to the animals intraperitoneally at a dose of 20 mg/kg, three-times a week for four weeks, a 42% suppression of tumor growth was observed compared to untreated controls. This would be the equivalent of 1,360 mg for a 150 lb adult. Note, the 20 mg/kg dose given to the test animals is 100 times lower than the LD50 for mice (i.e. the dose that would take to kill 50% of a test group).
Additionally, researchers observed “A potent antiangiogenic effect,” characterized by a reduced number blood vessels and other pro-angiogenic factors associated with the growth of the tumor’s blood supply.
The researchers concluded, “These data clearly establish the efficacy of liposomal curcumin in reducing human pancreatic cancer growth in the examined model. The therapeutic curcumin-based effects, with no limiting side-effects, suggest that liposomal curcumin may be beneficial in patients with pancreatic cancer.”
Considering the relatively high safety margin, affordability, accessibility and effectiveness (as demonstrated by pre-clinical research and a vast body of anecdotes) of turmeric extracts in fighting highly lethal cancers, we can only hope the medical establishment begins to incorporate these medicinal spices into their treatment protocols.

Robert Reich

At the root of most of our political and economic challenges is the pervasiveness of big money in our politics. What can we do about it? Most importantly, three things:

(1) Reverse the appalling Supreme Court 2010 decision "Citizen's United vs. Federal Election Commission" through constitutional amendment if that's what it takes.

(2) Revive and expand the system of public financing of elections. The other night, when he interviewed me on "The Daily Show," Jon Stewart asked me if campaign-finance reform has ever worked. Had I more time and a better memory I would have pointed out that the presidential public financing system enacted in the wake of Watergate scandals in 1974 worked well for 28 years -- through eight elections -- from 1976 to 2004. During these years every major party presidential nominee relied exclusively on public money for financing of his general election campaign. And from 1976 through 1996, every winner of the major parties’ respective presidential nominations did so with the assistance of public matching funds in the primary elections. Indeed, every Republican and Democratic primary candidate (except Connally in 1980, Forbes in 1996, Dornan in 1996 and Maurice Taylor in 1996) relied on public financing in their primaries.

(3) Ultimately, though, no set of reforms will take hold unless we reverse the growing concentration of income and wealth in America. As great jurist and Supreme Court justice Louis Brandeis said in the late 19th century, when we last faced this scourge of inequality, "We can either have democracy in this country or we can have great wealth concentrated in the hands of a few, but we can’t have both.”
So don't complain. Organize!

What most determines the strategy and tactics I advocate are their prospects for success. The question I ask myself is always whether I have good reason to believe a particular approach will be effective. It has to be about results.

Does confronting a
n oppressor bring results? I say no. Activists have been doing precisely that for decades upon decades, and yet here we stand. Oh, sure, in some cases to confront or attack an oppressor will indeed depose them, but only for another oppressor to arise in his place.

To fundamentally transform the soil of society requires a different strategy, one that doesn't confront oppressors so much as simply renders them irrelevant and obsolete.

Food Distribution in India

After approving the food security bill, India’s challenge is to get all that heavily subsidized food grain to the 800 million or so people eligible to the program.
The bill expands an existing program that uses a five-decade-old public distribution system to deliver food subsidies to the poor and hungry. Experts say the system is highly inefficient, with more than half the food siphoned off and sold in the open market for higher prices.

School Environment

America’s 115,000 schools have poor indoor quality

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), more than half of America’s 115,000 schools have poor indoor quality. Toxic substances lurk in everything from construction materials to snacks to hand sanitizers, potentially harming kids at critical moments of development. Check out our new infographic below to learn more about a child’s potential exposure to environmental toxins in the typical classroom or daycare setting.

Steven Spielberg

At 66, Spielberg is still a vital force in Hollywood. Last year’s Lincoln was a critical and financial success, earning 12 Oscar nominations and $275 million at the global box office. Two new TV shows from his Amblin Television, Under the Dome and The Americans, are hits, and he’s an executive producer on the upcoming fourth film in the lucrative Transformers franchise.
Then there’s the money he earns from his incredible history in Hollywood. ETJurassic Park and Raiders of the Lost Ark  are likely showing on TV somewhere in the world right now and helping to line Spielberg’s pockets. Every time a happy tourist pays for a ticket to Universal Studios in Florida, Spielberg gets a cut. Not only does he collect as a producer on Transformers, last year’s successful Men in Black 3 also added to Spielberg’s bottom line. We estimate that between June 2012 and June 2013, Spielberg earned $100 million.

Sweden - Permanent Residency to all Syrian refugee

Sweden has just offered a glimpse of light in a somberly dark tunnel for thousands of Syrian refugees displaced by violence and war. The Swedish government announced on September 3 that it would be granting permanent residency to any Syrian refugee seeking asylum that's already fled to Sweden.
This makes the Scandinavian nation the first and only country in the EU to have this kind of open-door policy for Syrians dealing with one of the worst sectarian bloodshed in modern history.
According to Annie Hoernblad, the spokesperson for the Migration Agency in Sweden, "The agency made this decision now because it believes the violence in Syria will not end in the near future."

Coffee Antioxidant - Plant Medicine

It’s an upside down world. We used to hear that coffee, a common drink to kick-start a person’s morning, was a guilty pleasure at best and a health evil at worst. Fast-forward to today, and we now know that coffee is a health elixir of the highest magnitude, offering protection to the heart, lowering the risk of several forms of cancer and reducing the risk of Parkinson’s disease.
Research into the natural properties of coffee shows that the daily brew is a potent protective antioxidant potion. Plants produce antioxidants to protect their cells from premature destruction from exposure to heat, light, air, moisture and time. In the human body, many of these substances are biologically active, and they help to protect our cells as well. Recent science suggests that these compounds may cause gene changes, which enable the body to express its own protective agents.
To simplify, antioxidants inhibit the “rusting” of cells in our body. Just as metals rust due to exposure to oxygen, cells in the body also become damaged by exposure to certain “reactive oxygen species” – or ROS. These damaging agents are caused by environmental toxins, smoking, poor eating habits, metabolism, exercise and other factors. When unchecked, these ROS contribute to degenerative diseases. Oxidative damage is associated with diabetes, arthritis, cancer, degenerative brain disorders, and numerous aspects of aging and degeneration.
